As you age, your bones become more susceptible to fracture and this risk is greater in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.  This is especially concerning as diabetics have a decreased ability to heal bone defects, and an increased mortality rate after fracture.  Our work is focused on  what causes these bones to fracture in the first place and identify the primary contributors of diabetic skeletal fragility.  Diabetes is a systemic disease that is known to affect the cardiovascular system and the extent to which impaired vasculature can lead to compromised bone health in diabetes is unclear. We are also investigating which regions of the bone become compromised as diabetes progresses. Combined, this will hopefully provide therapeutic targets (i.e. vasculature, specific regions of the bone) that can be treated by exercise or another therapy to improve mechanical outcomes.
