The two main components of bone - the collagen network and the mineral are responsible for the basic mechanical properties of bone.  We are specifically interested in how collagen cross-linking impacts mineralization.  The cross-linking profile is known to change with age and with disease (osteogenesis imperfecta, diabetes) and the profile can vary between anatomical locations (craniofacial vs. long bones).  By inhibiting collagen cross-link formation, we can examine how this changes the collagen organization and mineral properties to ultimately impact mechanics.
